Shocking Facts You Must Know !!!

On a casual talk with another makeup blogger I (We) found really shocking facts about makeup and makeup products that are sold in the market [if not International, at least Indian markets] I am surprised why haven't I come across or read any thing about all these so far !! It is pretty shocking and few are disgusting too but better we know them and take necessary steps to stay away as much as possible from all such non sense.

The Facts

->Not all products that comes to India are brand new.

I have noticed few products that have everything written in Arabic or some other language [especially near the Ingredients] but a sticker placed on top of it with new MFD and Expiry Date !! I once tried peeling it, which usually doesn't come off easily and found a old MFD and Expiry Date !!! How shocking is that? We all think we are buying brand new products for the money we pay, but no :(

These days I check the entire packaging and if I have even a small doubt about the MFD I just skip the product. I rather not buy it than to ruin my skin and waste my money.

->Not all products we buy are brand new.

Recently I visited a H&G store to buy few Maybelline Colorsensational Lipsticks. The shade Hooked On Pink had a red lid and I asked the SA about it. She immediately took a pink lid and placed it on this one and gave it to me. While doing this she smashed the tip of the lipstick and I said I don't want to buy that. She immediately took another lipstick [I guess Fatal Red] and twisted up both the lipsticks completely and there was visible difference in their lengths!! She said 'Mam, you get more quantity in this Pink than in the Red and that is why the tip got smashed'.

I was too confused - how come same lipsticks in different shades have different amount of the product? I was not very happy so just left the counter without buying anything. This happens with products that do not have any seal or any outer covering so it is better to avoid such products.

->Not all products we buy are unused.

I so wanted to try some shades in the colorbar eye pencils and this time the SA who came from the rest room [who was stinking !! and I doubt whether she washed her hands :( -sorry to say this but I think cleanliness is something very basic] came forward to help me. I couldn't say anything but just moved on to some other brand near by. After a while I kind of told this other SA to help me out with Colorbar eye pencils and 'Thank God' she did. She was showing me all the colors by swatching them on my hand. There were a few shades which didn't have testers and without any hesitation she just took out the brand new pencils from the box and put it on my hands !! The same with brand new nail enamels as well. She didn't even bother to see whether that particular shade had any tester !! What would you call this-laziness??

I decided not to go to that store ever again. Even if I do I'll make sure whether the eye pencils are brand new [you can sort of see the tip and find out] and never buy any nail enamels from them.

  • Have you had any similar experience anywhere in your city?
  • And how to deal with such problems?

Please do share and let us not get cheated for the hard earned money we are paying.

  1. such an informative post aartho..i agree..thees brands shud start wrapping even the nailpaints with a plastic cover and seal them..i hav seen so many SAs giving brand new nail paints for trial..hate them..n as i told u, the maybelline lipstick that i got, was sealed, whereas urs was not..so either the SAs themselves must have used it or given for trial..these days am extra careful..i dont bother if they giv me looks..am paying for wat am getting so nothing to me shameful about

  2. You know these ind of things happen in all the shops i have been to. The SAs are careful only in the standalone stores. And about the nail paints, the faces store at Infinity mumbai doesn't keep any testers and they gladly pick any bottle and paint your nail if you want chk out any particular shade. :/

    1. Very true, they learn few words like smooth, moisturizing, pigmented and keep repeating the same words to describe all the products they have!

  8. A really interesting post, Aarthi. I think people buying it need to be more aware about such things, then only we can make a change in brand attitudes. SAs themselves I won't really blame for their ignorance, most of them are badly trained (no excuse for the clean hands part, though) and it's the brands that are to be blamed for this. A lot of products get released so late into the Indian market, I really won't be surprised if the dates are all off!
